About Grabadoc Healthcare Society

Grabadoc has been providing out of hours healthcare to the residents of Bexley and Greenwich since 1995. The organisation was founded by and is run by local GPs. All the doctors providing the service work in local practices in Greenwich or Bexley.  You can rest assured that the service you receive comes from someone your own doctor knows.

Grabadoc is a private company commissioned by Bexley Care Trust and Greenwich Primary Care Trust. We cover almost half a million patients and handle some 55,000 calls per year.

Our aim is to provide high quality, cost effective and local healthcare with a reputation for clinical excellence and integrity.

The service operates between 6.30pm and 8.00am Monday to Friday with 24 hour coverage at weekends and Bank holidays. The service is here to deal with medically urgent problems that have arisen while your surgery is closed, and which cannot wait until it re-opens. We will attempt to deal with your urgent problem, to help relieve your symptoms or assess whether you need hospital treatment.

It is important that you consult your own GP for follow up treatment if the problem has not resolved.  Your own GP is also the best person to sort out any on-going problems.

Grabadoc is not here to provide a second opinion or to offer a consultation out of normal surgery hours because it might be more convenient. Callers without urgent medical problems will delay our ability to respond quickly to those people who have a genuine need for medical care out of surgery hours.

Organisational structure – The executive management team comprises two Medical Directors and a General Manager who report to a Board comprised of 8 elected local GPs

Patients initially contact Grabadoc by telephone. Call handlers record the patients’ details and a brief description of their symptoms. They are also trained to assess the urgency of the call.  If they feel your call is an emergency they may advise you to call 999 or they may suggest you go to A&E.  For all other calls, one of our doctors will telephone you back to discuss the problem.

Please see “Our Service” for more details of how your call may be dealt with.

Zero tolerance – We will not tolerate verbal or physical abuse towards our staff.  All incidents will be reported to the police and you may be refused care.

Patients who have been abusive or mis-use our service will have their details reported to their own GP
